Class 4 - Saturday, March 28th
Most of this class was spent discussing the Haines text. But at the tail end of it we watched the Joel Barker video, Discovering the Future,in which he discussed the power, and danger, of paradigms - those belief systems which tie us into a particular mode of awareness, filtration of input and predisposition. Of course the exercise we were given that night had us looking for conspiracies and paradigm shifts in every corner. But sometimes, a challenge is just a challenge and a question is just a question. The real problem is trying to figure out when your paradigms really are getting in the way of progress.
How does one set up a system of self-checks and balances to employ as a litmus test for paradigm paralysis? I don't have any clear answers yet, but I do believe that whatever system evolves will need to ensure that we ask ourselves to look objectively at data and to bring in a fresh, outside perspective when it seems as if we are too close to the matter.
