Jose

My goals for this course are:

1.      To develop the skills and knowledge necessary to create blogs, wikis, podcast and other technology based learning tool.

2.      To apply this knowledge to PSU Recreation programs staff training and development.

3.    To create and use a blog as a learning tool for training recreation student employees as well as to communicate with the PSU community.

Please check out my profile and my first blog at http://recreationandeducation.wordpress.com/2007/12/07/hello-world/

My class final project is going to be the creation of a tutorial for using video technology.

I. Current TechnologyVideo

II. Evaluation of its efficacy as a learning tool

           Benefits

·        Cost effective

o       For training purposes after you create one video you can use it to train all your employees even the ones you hire mid way into the semester.

o       There is no need to hire a professional speaker or a Hollywood star to talk to your students or employees if the video is accessible online to be downloaded.

·        You can see it as many times you need or want.  The video can be paused or be reviewed later therefore refreshing skills.

·        When it is used for training purposes it can be very convenient since you do not depend on a schedule.

·        The participants can view the “real environment” from home.

·        Creates consistency in the material delivered for learning purposes.

·        Access via YouTube and Google Videos to thousand of movie clips and videos as a vehicle for learning.

Drawbacks

·        When it is used for training it cannot be tailored to specific needs since it has been prerecorded, therefore cannot answer questions as you go, as you would in real life.

·        The need of at least a dual ISDN lines running at 128kbps for videoconferencing or watching a training video.

·        Cost of having to pay for the high speed internet (unless the student employees use the library)

·        The need for a higher bandwith for optimal video streaming

·        It takes time to become familiarized with thousands of titles and video clips that are available online or in the local video library.

III. Policy for PSU

IV. Privacy-

For YouTube please visit:

V. Netiquette- Adapted from the work of Nancy Flynn, 2006

  • Think before you film (or write)
  • Be discreet, be professional
  • Do not use the blog or the video to let off steam
  • Use appropriate language and be inclusive
  • Do not create a post or a video anonymously, stand behind your post or video
  • Do not comment unless you have something valuable to add to the video or post.

VI.  Creating a video using a video camera or phone

First we have to have a video camara.  I have a sony personal video camera.  A good introductory camera is the Flip (www.theflip.com)

VII.  How to plan and prepare for a video presentation/conference or training

  • Keep it short.  No more than five minutes
  • Prepare props and graphics before hand.
  • Minimize background distraction unless it enhances the educational product.
  • Keep it simple
  • Minimize unnecessary movements, use a tripod.
  • Hire a sidekick to interact with the instructor
  • If you do not have the time or the skills necessary to produce a quality video, then hire a director.
  • Vary activities to spark the interest
  • Vary the camera angle
  • Move slowly and make smooth topic transitions.

VIII.  Please refer to the Power Point presentation for information on how to:

  • Edit a video using Windows Movie maker?
  • Create iPod video files using Windows Movie maker.
  • How to upload the video on the web?
